Indiscriminate sharing of links

OK, maybe not indiscriminate, but after a long week, instead of boring you with my own thoughts, I'll point you in the direction of some other good stuff to read.

- Via Awful Announcing, it looks like maybe the national media is starting to talk about what we've known all along, and what Fire Joe Morgan has been blogging about for so long... Joe Morgan is awful.

- Are all of the pieces falling into place for the Sonics to move from Seattle to Oklahoma City?

- From Just Call Me Juice via Deadspin... one of the greatest videos ever.

- An NBA ref betting on games... uh, yeah, this is really bad news for the NBA. Could be one of the more interesting stories to follow the rest of the summer.

- OK, maybe the Bucs are going a little overboard with this QB thing.

- From The Sports Flow some of the best incoming freshmen in college football next year.

- I agree with Pacifist Viking... I have respect for anyone that can quote Gandhi.

Have good weekend!

Hodge Podge

There were a few things I wanted to write about, but none of them were enough by themselves for a column... so I figured the best choice would be to combine them all into a hodge podge type thing.

- First, a little bit of housecleaning. I had a little interview over at Green Bay Railbird Central, which can be found here. As you may be able to guess from the name of the site, they were mostly looking for a Vikings fan's take on the Packers right now... just served as another reminder that the start of the NFL regular season is only like 2 months away! YES!

- Also had an interview over at The Sports Flow about a week ago, which was nice. I'm just glad I can be an inspiration to someone for something.

- Getting into other news, you probably saw that Rashard Lewis was sent to the Magic as part of a sign-and-trade and will make roughly $126 million over the next 7 years. That's ridiculous. Rashard is a real nice player, but are you kidding me? He's a good scorer, and he's still in his prime, but this is a bit absurd. Let's just say if I had Rashard Lewis' agent I'd probably have a gig writing for the Magic's website for $3 million a year.

- The Lewis deal allowed Darko Milicic to become a free agent, and he signed with the Grizzlies for what is believed to be $21 million over 3 years. Seems sort of moderate risk, high reward deal for the Grizz. Darko certainly has the physical tools to be a very good big man, the question is whether or not he's going to display the work ethic and effort every night in order to do that. If he does, he's a bargain. If not, he'll be a bit overpaid.

- One of the most interesting subplots (to me at least) of the free agency period is seeing where Andray Blatche winds up. He's the 20 year-old forward for the Wizards with lots of upside. There was talk that if he had been in this draft, he might have gone in the Lottery. Interesting to see if some team offers him the full midlevel, and if the Wizards would match it.

- There's also been talk that Ichiro will be re-upping with the Mariners for $100 million over 5 years. From a baseball standpoint, he'll be overpaid. He's a really good hitter, but he doesn't walk a ton and one of his best strengths (his speed) tends to go quickly with age. On the other hand, he generates a ton of revenue for the Mariners, and they basically didn't have any choice but to sign him for big money.

What else has caught your eye?

Links!

I'm short on time at the moment, so rather than write something mediocre (as usual), I figured it was a good time for links.

- The fact that the first 2 games of the NBA Finals have been dreadfully boring is showing up in the ratings.

- This is a terrible story, especially me being a Vikings fan. It's terrible to happen to anybody, but it especially hits closer to home being that I grew up watching him play safety for the Vikings.

- Trent Green still thinks he has a few more years left in him. Hey, more power to him if he does. I'm not quite as optimistic.

- Shaq is going to star in his own reality show helping out obese middle schoolers. Honestly, making a joke here is too easy.

- Stiles Points continues with their Five Good Questions series.

- Congratulations to The Big Picture for finally making it onto The Blog Show (now I just need to do something worthy of making it!)

- All on the Field Sports Blog asks: What is a sport?

- Joakim Noah: The Gay Falconer... this is why Deadspin is the best.

That's what I got.

Odds & Ends

I don't really feel like putting a ton of coherent thoughts up, but some things that caught my eye:

- Joey Crawford suspended indefinitely. Bravo David Stern, bravo. Tossing Duncan for laughing (as well as asking him if he wanted to fight) was one of the worst reffing moves I've ever seen. Actually, it probably was the worst. As Tim Duncan said, Crawford wanted his TV time, and he got it. Good riddance.

- Great videos over at The Sports Flow today... this is the stuff I should be putting on Sports Videos, but I've been kind of lazy.

- Refer to WBRS and The Big Picture for expressing similar thoughts as mine as far as all of the events in Blacksburg. Not much to say really. Nothing I write here will be able to accurately convey the tragedy there.

- On a completely different note, I tried to be first on the Francisco Liriano bandwagon, picking him up in all my leagues. This year, my recommendation is to run (stop reading) and go pick up Tim Lincecum right now in all of your leagues. Stash him on the bench, because he should be up soon. In AAA for the Giants, he has thrown 18.2 scoreless innings this year with 14 baserunners allowed and 28 strikeouts. Pick him up immediately.

- Fire Joe Morgan... maybe the best site ever.

That's what I got.

Happy Easter (Links!)

I'm on Easter break right now, so I'm kind of lazy. So I'll just go with some link-giving.

A little bit of everything, from the coaching hires to thoughts on Barry Bonds. [The Sports Flow]

Ricky Williams has apparently kicked his drug habit. And an interesting question.. would you be upset if you found out your favorite players occasionally smoked marijuana? [WBRS Sports Blog]

As if you already didn't have enough reasons to like Colin Cowherd... here's another one. [The Big Picture]

Can the Gators win the College Baseball World Series now too? On a related note, I am starting to hate the University of Florida. Too selfish with all the winning. [Shot to Nothing]

As Tim Brewster tries to revive a struggling Gopher football program, this isn't exactly what he needs right now. [Signal to Noise]

And Happy Easter!

Weekend Links

No time to write tonight so I'll just point you in the direction of some other stuff you should enjoy over the weekend.

The first part for your Championship Week viewing, with Championship games kicking off today (Saturday). [Just Call Me Juice]

Jake Plummer, the man with the great stache, is retiring. Apparently, the competition from a guy recovering from a spleen injury is too much for him. [Signal to Noise]

A good deal by Matt Millen? Well, even a broken clock is right twice a day. [Sweaty Men Endeavors]

The real tournament to keep an eye on this March. [The Big Picture]

Bubble teams... who's in and who's out? [The Sports Flow]

The next Anna Benson? As WBRS says, at least Carl Pavano's "injuries" are a little easier to understand. [WBRS Sports Blog]

A look at Wide Receivers and Free Agency. [Pacifist Viking]

Some writers still don't like any type of baseballs stats at all. What a shame. [Fire Joe Morgan]

That's what I got... have a good weekend and watch a lot of college basketball.

Links and stuff

Since it's been a long day and I don't really feel like, well, writing anything, I thought I'd do the next best thing... link to good stuff. Subjectively speaking.

First off, I put some cool stuff (I think it's cool at least) up at Sports Videos, specifically I have started up a Gus Johnson section. The man is good.

Is it really only 21 more days to March Madness? The best time of the year!

Here's something I know Josh over the Double-A Zone was really excited about: The 3-Minute Drill. Check it out if you get a chance. And just check out the Double-A Zone in general. It's not easy to cover all divisions and all sports of the NCAA, but Josh does a great job on touching on a lot of different, interesting topics.

You may as well go check out Deadspin... I guarantee you'll find something interesting over there, or I'll refund your money.

Just Call Me Juice is already calling an early round Ohio St. exit from the Big Dance... and there's definitely some merit there. Let me also take the time to announce that Just Call Me Juice is becoming one of my favorite blogs for quality college basketball action.

I know you've always wondered what the wackiest baseball injuries of the 90s were... well, now you know.

This is a little older, but The Big Picture's interview with Dan Shanoff (former Daily Quickie writer now with his own blog) was one of the most fascinating things I've read in a while. I implore you to read it, because it's excellent.

Norv Turner... luckiest coach on Earth.

Enjoy these links... I'll try to do better the next time.

Other material that is better than average

Because really folks, better than average is all we shoot for here. Anyway, I kind of have a headache here, so instead of, um, writing a lot of stuff out, I'll just link around. Which is probably pretty evident.

First a few different guys I know started a couple different blogs... In Beane We Trust and The Sports Flow. I'm not in the business of guaranteeing that you won't be disappointed, but I don't think you will.

For the best Joe Mauer impersonating Mean Joe Greene commercial ever, click on this link. It's pretty much awesome.

If this happens, it will replace the Joe Mauer commercial as the greatest thing ever. Seriously, I would pay to see The Chuckster race Dick Bavetta.

At some point during last year's Big East Tournament when Gerry McNamara was making seemingly every shot he took, I declared him my Personal Jesus (since been redacted since that was not likely to ever happen again in his career)... my, how the mighty have fallen [all the way down to the D-League].

Bruce Pearl: coolest coach in America?

For greater ease of use, you can always subscribe to my feed if you want. It's up to you.

That's all I got. I'll try to do better the next time.

L-L-L-Links

It was a busy day for me with homework and the like, which makes it a perfect day to let other do the work for me and just hand out some links.

First off, if you haven't checked out my Sports Videos blog, you should. You're just going to have to take my word for it. Latest videos include an Adrian Peterson highlight video and a Len Bias tribute video. Just try and resist the goodness of that.

Second, you should probably go to Deadspin, because they always have good stuff.

Ian has all you need to know about the Chris Webber in Detroit signing. As far as my thoughts, I think it's a good move for Detroit simply because Webber still has some skills and came cheap. However, Webber's skills have diminished, and to say he's a defensive liability is quite an understatement at this point. Interesting piece from John Hollinger about it, including the observation that in about 2 years the Pistons have turned from a defensive dominated team to a Euro style team. They'll be fun to watch.

Chan Gailey in the running for an NFL job? Sadly enough, yes he is. But then again, 28-21 as a college coach is pretty awesome, right?

Eli Manning, everybody!

In case you haven't seen it, WBRS Sports Blog has the video of Tony Allen tearing his ACL after going for a dunk well after the whistle blew. Just an unfortunate and ugly injury.

Lastly, a marketer for Carmelo Anthony sent me an email asking me if I would help promote Carmelo Anthony's Myspace page... and since he asked so nicely, I feel obliged to include a link here.

That's what I got. I'll try to be better the next time. Maybe.

Other good readin'

I got kinda busy tonight, so I wasn't able to write anything, which is either a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it. Fortunately, not everyone else took a day off, so here's what you should read instead (or in addition):

Awful Announcing has their review up of the Fox NCAA Football announcers... a good read, along with their ESPN review.

And speaking of the Fox guys, I found this quote from Bill Simmons' chat to be highly amusing:

I thought Fox's coverage, in general, was almost surreal. What about Eddie George and Emmitt Smith trash-talking each other during the pregame show while Chris Rose sat there with a blank look on his face? He looked like the "Airplane" stewardess taking dinner orders from the two guys speaking jive.

The other sequence I liked from the chat:

Jeannie (Philadelphia): Did you hear the Ohio State band playing the love theme from "Titanic" during halftime of Monday's game? Please tell me I'm not the only one who found the parallels between the sinking ship and the sinking Buckeyes team hilarious.

Bill Simmons: I loved it. I was delighted. I would have enjoyed it more if my ears weren't bleeding from Thom Brenneman. By the way, just got coffee … I'm about to wake up.

JR (San Diego): Tell Jeannie the answer is no because men don't watch the halftime show.

Good stuff there. Many say Bill Simmons has sorta gone from good to bad, and in some ways I agree as far as his columns... but he still puts out funnier stuff than most of the things I read. Sure, it's sometimes cluttered around stuff that doesn't make sense, but I've just come to accept that.

Moving on... as if you needed another reason to think Sean Salisbury is weird and creepy. But at least they fired Harold Reynolds [/sarcasm].

An era has passed... TO has fired his publicist. That's too bad things didn't work out.

Have fun!

A new little project of mine

One thing I really enjoy about sports is that I can watch old videos of stuff I've already seen, and it's still interesting and I'll see stuff I might have missed the first time around. Videos are cool like that.

So with that, I decided to create a new blog hopefully showcasing some of those videos... Sports Videos... unfortunately sportvideos.blogspot was taken, and so was sportvideos.blogspot, so I went with http://sportsvids.blogspot.com. I'm still a poor college guy, which is why I went with blogger again, but that's ok.

Anyway, check it out, hopefully it can grow into something cool. If not, well at least I tried. I added some of you on the blogroll there, so if you can find it in your heart to add that blog as well on your site, I'd appreciate that. If not, that's ok. If you're interesting in exchanging links for this blog or that blog, well, you can always email me [uclabruins24 AT hotmail.com] and I'm usually happy to comply.

So anyway, check it out, and only one more day until the national title game!

Links I Enjoy

I don't really have much to write about today, so I'll do what all good people do in that situation... hand some links out to others more talented than me, at least on this day.

First, a non-sports note... did anyone ever watch the TV show Arrested Development? I just rented a DVD of it and watch the first 6 episodes... great, great show. If you haven't seen it, I implore you to check it out. Er, finish reading this first, then check it out.

Zach from The Big Picture continues his solid work with his blogger interviews, this time with Matt Uffords from With Leather. As with his first one, he really does a great job and it's an interesting look at the blogger with some info you probably didn't know.

Terrell Owens missed the Pro Bowl. Oh darn.

Goodbye Brad Radke, a man of true class. It was a lot of fun watching him pitch for the Twins for so many years, especially this last year when he was in such enormous pain.

Passion & Pride always has all the Sixers news you need... which is good because they're usually too depressing for me to write about these days.

Just another example of why I love Fire Joe Morgan.

The Peter King Manlove Translator. Brilliant.

You have your Mauer Sideburns, now get your Childress Mustache! Just seems like the fitting way to end this.

Links and such

I'm all about giving here, which is why I'll give you some links that I enjoyed in the hopes that you too may enjoy them. Well, that and I had to write a paper that I just finished, and don't have time right now to continue my college basketball previews. But that's a secret for just you and I, so rest assured those will start back up tomorrow.

Anyway, enough inane rambling. Here's what you should check out:

- Pretty cool new project I have a small part of and you should all check out (if you know what's good for you)... The Water Cooler Online.

- Deadspin has all of your Harold Reynolds news. And frankly, if I could sue ESPN for turning to crap the past couple of years, I'd consider it.

- It's ok Insomniac, 1 out of 4 ain't bad. It's not like my football picks were any better.

- I'm pretty sure Raja Bell's site is the worst on the internet. As always, YAYSports is on top of things. (have I mentioned before how much I love YAYsports! NBA? Because I do)

- WBRS reports that the Notre Dame game won't be on national TV this week... poor poor Irish fans.

- Jeff Brantley won't be on ESPN next year... who do I write the check to for making this possible?

- The Philadelphia 76ers are 3-0... there's a long ways to go, but what a great start. Guess Iverson isn't wearing down quite yet.

- If you still haven't read it, my Big 12 Preview... if you have read it alread, go play outside before it gets too cold.

Links and the like

I'm still recovering from my Accounting test I had, so I thought I'd just post some links, in the hopes that someone, somewhere would get enjoyment out of at least one of them. If you do, let me know. I'm an easy person to please.

Who's the post-game tirade champion? Big Picture reports, you decide.

Now this is a celebration I can support.

I heart Fire Joe Morgan.

I haven't been able to watch a whole lot of baseball since the Twins were defeated, but apparently it is still going on, and we will have a Game 7... and the pitching matchup... wait for it... JEFF SUPPAN VS. OLIVER PEREZ!! Perez' ERA is 6.55 right now. Maybe he's just been saving his best stuff.

College basketball is right around the corner... and that means previews. The start of the college basketball year can't come soon enough, as far as I'm concerned.

You know, as bad as Isiah Thomas is as a GM, maybe he should just focus on that instead of focusing on TV analysts. My bad, stupid idea.

Hopefully that will be enough to hold you over. If not, well, my apologies.

Feels like a links day!

Ok, I had to do a lot of studying for my first Accounting test Wednesday (think of me at about 5:15 CDT!), so I didn't really have time to write something cool and exciting (like I ever do anyway). Which means it's a perfect day to spread some cool links around in the hopes that it will point at least one person to a page they like!

First off, don't look now, but the Minnesota Twins are a 1/2 game behind the Detroit Tigers for the division lead. And Justin Morneau went 5/5 in the game, bumping his average up to .326, and getting his 124th RBI of the year, only 5 behind David Ortiz for the AL Lead. Yes, his MVP argument is strengthening everyday.

I think I agree with Bruins Nation in that Oklahoma is overreacting just a wee bit to the blown call. There is no doubt that it was a completely blown call, and there is absolutely no excuse for missing it both on the field and and in the replay booth... and I can even kinda agree with asking the game to be voided (though it definitely should not be), but now they're talking about canceling their game at Washington next year. I understand that Oklahoma takes their football seriously, but threatening phone calls to the replay official are a little much. Not that that's never been done before, but it's time to move on. Which is what I'll do now.

Why is Deadspin the best around? Exhibit A. Not only is the post itself funny, but the comments are absolutely hilarious.

Kevin Antcliff is back in business on the newly created Mile High Sports!

This didn't take long (and I can't say I blame Lions fans!)

Erasmus James is done for the year... great. :(

Anyway, this is just a little bit to whet your appetite... I'll be back tomorrow with a regularly scheduled post!

Links For Your Perusal

As I finish up with a little more homework for my college football previews, let me just direct you to some links that I kinda sorta liked. Or something.

I professed my love for college football yesterday, but the NFL is pretty good too, and you can check out The Armchair Quarterback for some of the NFL previews. My Opinion on Sports has some more NFL previews and predictions as well.

As Deadspin points out, the 4th pick in this year's fantasy drafts sucks. We know who should be going in the top 3, but it's sort of a crapshoot after that. Edge? Peyton Manning? Tiki Barber?

Live-blogging an NFL preseason game? I must give Ian credit... I'm not sure I could get through much of a preaseason game, let alone live blog it.

There few things I enjoy more then Fire Joe Morgan going through a Joe Morgan chat. So bad, yet so so enjoyable.

The first photograb for "Who Shot Mamba?" is finally here!

Adn finally, a nice little article on ESPN about the dual QB stuff in college football, and a look at some of the QB battles still going on as we approach the start of the year.

Hope you enjoy, and hopefully I'll be able to start some stuff I want tomorrow as I enter into my last week of summer vacation. *cry*

Links and stuff

With the weekend already upon us, I decided to post some links that I hope you might find a wee bit interesting. If you don't, well please accept my humble apologies and I'll never do it again (well, I probably will).

First off, lots of thanks to the writer of this article at SI.com, which has sent a lot of traffic to Thank You Brian Sabean over the past couple of days. That was certainly a nice surprise.

Now we know the real reason Jim Bowden didn't trade Alfonso Soriano at the deadline... he fell asleep. That would explain a lot, actually.

Need fantasy previews? Well, The Gatorade Dump has a whole bunch of NFL ones, and Give Me The Rock has a whole bunch of NBA ones. It's never really too early to start getting ready for the fantasy year. Or at least that's what I tell myself.

A review of the 2003 NBA Draft, AKA, Joe Dumars taking Darko over Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Bosh. Whoops.

It's never too early for some predictions for the Maui Invitational... especially when they have UCLA coming out on top.

Have you checked out the list of the 50 greatest NBA players yet? Well, you should (pretty please?!?)

And finally, a video of ESPN Sportscenter bloopers, including of course Charley Steiner laughing over the national anthem of Carl Lewis. "Writte by Francis Scott 'Off' Key."

Links updated!!

Ok, so in a process that took way too long and was probably much too tedious, I've updated my links and split some stuff up into categories for your and mine reading pleasure.

In the process I weeded out some blogs that aren't active anymore, and added lots more stuff.

Anyway, if you aren't on the list and have a blog, and would like to/think you should be, or if you link to me and I don't have a link back, drop me a comment or an email at uclabruins24 AT hotmail.com. I realize that there's lots of great stuff out there that I missed, and I still need to add stuff (especially to the football section), but I'm trying.

Other than that, have a super day!

Weekend O' Links

Ok, so I finally got the day off from work (yay for me!), and work is the time I normally think about something to write about, but instead I was out at the river, which is way more fun. Anyway, the point of this babbling is to say that nothing really that interesting happened today, so instead of me boring you, I'll link you to some things that entertained me at least.

- First off, this is a couple of days old, but Bill Simmons did a chat thingy again, and parts of it are quite amusing. My favorites:

But I didn't think the Zidane thing was as big of a deal as everyone made it out to be -- 8 minutes left in extra time, and it's not like they didn't have 10 guys left. Plus, their keeper, Paul Shaffer, didn't come close to stopping any of Italy's penalty kicks. They would have lost either way. I'm just excited that Tyson's ear bite on Holyfield finally has a sports rival.
Bill Simmons: I'm just disappointed that Buck wasn't announced the World Cup Final during Zidane's head butt. I just picture him giving us a 5-minute lecture about sportsmanship, saying the word "vicious" 330 times and then sobbing on live TV.

Chris Berman (Bristol, Conn): You're with me, Sports Guy.

Bill Simmons: (Trying to fight off 100,000 bolts of electric current ...)

By the way, go to Deadspin for the "You're with me Leather" reference.

- Jason Tyner: Hero.

- A new site described to me as "Buster Olney-like". I report, you decide.

- I know you've always wondered who the top 10 teams to never win an NBA Title were... well, now you know!

- Sorry Cubs fans... it's looking more and more like the Cubs need to cut the cord with Kerry Wood and Mark Prior. Because they get injured and stuff.

- A heartfelt letter from our own Barbaro. This coming from the same guy who gave us some early speculation on what Materazzi really said to Zidane. Among the guesses: "You play soccer like an American!"

- Looking for a message board? You can always try The Hangout, part of Kevin Antcliff's site.

- Need a 2nd half MLB Fantasy Guide? Well here's a pretty good one.

- Thanks for all your help in beating the Detroit Tigers, Kansas City! (note: that's sarcasm)

- Now that I'm finding soccer more interesting, subplots like this over in the European Leagues are suddenly much more interesting.

Anyway, this should hold you over while you wait for your next thrilling installment here on Complete Sports! (yes, that's sarcasm too)

Links for your weekend reading pleasure

With a bit of a calm before the World Cup final on Sunday and the All-Star festivities starting up on Monday, here's some good links for your reading pleasure.

- First from Bill Simmons, one of his annual columns that I enjoy the most... his NBA Trade Value Index... always worth a read.

- Mark Prior offered a two-year extension by the Disabled List. The Onion pretty much rocks my socks off.

- Now this is what the law is all about!

- Nadal vs. Federer. We've been here before.

- So yeah... A.J. Pierzynski? Definitely better than the best hitter in the AL or the AL ERA leader! /sarcasm

- In a slow sports day, here's a list of more boring sports stuff!

- So yeah... I'm pretty glad I took John Lackey in every fantasy league I could, after he was perfect after allowing a leadoff double. 10 Ks, 1 hit, 0 BB. 7-5 with a 2.88 ERA.

Anyway, I apologize if my writing has been spotty lately... I've been real busy with work and just mostly enjoying my summer whenever I can, so I've been kind of lazy. I'll have something that hopefully cool involving the MLB, probably sometime after the ASB, and then as we get closer and closer to the end of summer I might slow down more. And then of course, as I get into the school year, I'll probably have more free time (funny how that works), plus we'll be getting into another high spot of the sports year, where I'll be a little more motivated. So I have that going for me, which is nice.

Until then, don't forget to recycle!
