Yes yes, I know, technically it already is spring, but it never actually feels like it until the first real day of baseball. There was one game last night, but everyone knows this is the real day. According to Sweaty Man Endeavors, this might be the best sports day of the year. A quick roundup, since I have time to kill before the National Title Game.
- The Post-Leo Mazzone Era started out a little rough in Atlanta, even though they held on for an 11-10 win over the Dodgers. Chris Reitsma got the save, but he gave up 2 runs in 1.1 innings to get it.
- Jimmy Rollins did extend his hit streak to 37 games, but that wasn't nearly enough to overcome Albert Pujols' two HR as the Cardinals dominated the Phillies 13-5.
- The Angels held on to beat the Mariners 5-4. The good news for Seattle? Rookie catcher Kenji Johima hit a longball.
- 16 runs for the Cubs? Cubs top the Reds 16-7 which pretty much verifies everyone's thoughts about Aaron Harang as an opening day starter. Although Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano didn't fare much better.
- Everyone's favorite surprise team the Brewers started off right with a 5-2 win over Pittsburgh, getting HR from Carlos Lee and JJ Hardy.
- Kenny Rogers impressed in his Detroit debut, giving up 1 run in 6 innings as the Tigers beat the Royals 3-1.
- Tampa Bay and Baltimore combined for 6 HR, but the Orioles beat the Rays 9-6. Miguel Tejada, Jeff Conine, Melvin Mora, and Luis Matos all hit Quadrangles for the O's.
- Curt Schilling also impressed today, pitching 7 innings and giving up 2 runs in a 7-3 win over the Rangers.
Unfortunately, the Twins don't open until tomorrow, but if you get a chance, watch their game against the Blue Jays. The pitching matchup is Johan Santana vs. Roy Halladay, who were the two best pitchers in the AL last year.
